The punchline doesn't land for me. Is there a Japanese cultural thing going on here where goalies aren't seen as popular?

I think the punchline is just that he doesn't get to show the results of his training more (as he'll be stuck in the back), but yeah being a goalkeeper doesn't mean that they shouldn't learn the fundamentals.

Haha. You're putting more thought into it than the author did. The punchline is just that he isn't actively doing what he practiced for. The story doesn't lean on it long enough to say whether his training did or did not help. Just that the position he ended up having is visibly different than what he practiced.

Not sure about Japan, but here in Italy when we played football as kids nobody wanted to be the goalkeeper. It wasn't a fancy role, plus you got the blame if the opponents scored.
