Pragmatically thinking, it makes sense to get the hero out of the picture as soon as they defeat the demon lord. He is more of a threat than the actual demon lord because he had enough power to not only kill the demon lord, but all of her minion he meet along the way as well. If he goes off the deep end, he could become a even greater threat.

Dang, this manga is so sad and funny at the same time. It has a perfect 50/50 balance that's really rare

Huh, this answered most of my questions. A bit sad for the hero though. If the former demon king was actually tormenting humanity and pushing the, towards extinction or ruin (as said (like if that wasn’t just propaganda the hero was told)), he was basically in a “damned if you do; damned if you don’t” situation. From what we’ve heard the humans suck, and now we learn that if he hadn’t changed identities both the demons and the humans would want him dead.
