Y'know, it's hard, not having lived in Japan, to get a grip on how exaggerated things are in manga from actual society. It doesn't help that many of the more "controversial" topics in Japan are only spoke in hush tones and aren't allowable dinner table conversation like it might be here.

So I know that there's a fair bit of a "gay subculture" in Japan in very, very concentrated areas (and the only reason I know about this is because some of the gay community in Japan hates the living fuck out of Masaki Sumitani for his "Hard Gay" skit, whereas others in the community don't care/think he made homosexuality more open and accepted in Japan) and how there's a lot of gay nightclub/night life to be had in some districts of Tokyo which are basically known for having lots of establishments.

But I have to wonder: does the average fellow school kid in Japan (like middle/high school) accepting or not? Again, I have no idea how prevalent things like fujoshis actually are in Japan compared to the manga I see, but you'd have to think if that they exist even at a small percentage of what we see in manga there's a lot of them and they'd probably be pretty supportive of said relationships.

I remember back to the late 80s and early 90s in America and how I'm told by people that live(d) there and reading about it, a lot of those issues seem comparable culturally. Lots of uncomfortable people and then slow acceptance as people stop giving a shit. But I think Japan is so different culturally and socially that it might not apply, even in generalisms and off-hand comparisons.
