He's not a bad person, he just has masochistic tendencies and they take advantage of that to manipulate him. As long as they're hypocrites and think they're better than him when in fact they're worse, the protagonist will still be someone worth feeling bad for.

But it is very likely that he will sink deeper and deeper because when you can't escape, you either cry or take advantage.

He can still escape others would've already given up completely if they were in his position but at least ueno has tried to change(not that it has worked but still), so i really hope there comes a point where he finally hits his limit and tells them off not completely but at least to a point where he isn't treated like a slave
