This may be due to two reasons: it's said that Oguri fell in love with Horlicks when he saw her (the only time he stopped eating for any reason was when she was around) and the fact that he apparently knew which opponent was the strongest (whenever he raced with Tamamo he kept paying attention to him, for examples)
