I can literally imagine how much desu wa or sama there was in the original chapter. Also, is Meijiro the only family whose family ties were directly preserved in the game from real life?

Biwa Hayahide and Narita Brian are siblings in both real life and the game. Pretty sure they used the rule of if they share a mother the characters are related, otherwise they aren’t.

So, in most cases when they depict ancestor/descendant or sibling/sibling pairs as friends/rivals, their relation was made by male horses?

That is part of it. Though I do believe that being rivals with another character in umamsume has a few different aspects to it. Including having races against each other. Generally, and this I noticed in the anime though it also appears in game, when the Uma’s greatly respect another Uma who they never race against (Tokai and Rudolf for example) that suggests a relationship from a male horse. (Other examples include is Maruzensky and Sakura Chiyono O, father son pair; and a weird mention in season 1 of the anime where Special Week talks about how pretty and great Mauruzensku is, Maruzensky is Special Weeks grandfather.). I’m sure there are examples that I can’t think of, but that is a way to guess if they are related.

There also may be examples that don’t fall into that category: I don’t know if Silence Suzuka and Special Week are related and they have a very similar vibe to their relationship despite not racing each other.

in addition, because I’m now on a rant, I will also add that while sisters in game follow the rule of sharing the same mother, I don’t know if there sharing the same father means the two characters are necessarily completely unrelated by blood.

Take Mejiro Ryan, Mejiro Bright, and Mejiro Dober. In real life, Ryan sired both Bright and Dober. In game Dober is shown to be close with both Ryan and Bright. (I am unaware if Bright and Ryan have a relationship in game/other media.) None of them are direct siblings.

However they all exist as part of the Mejiro clan. It is also unclear what constitutes membership in the Mejiro clan in game. Is it bloodlines? Is it a weird coincidence of name? Something else?

So it is entirely possible that Ryan, Dober and Bright are all related, they just aren’t full blooded siblings.

TLDR: Uma’s relationships with each other IRL are weird and hard to parse out except full blooded sisters. Those ones share the same mother.

Rivalry in general is a different matter entirely. I'm talking about horses whose blood-related relationships were rewritten as super friendship or super friendship plus rivalry. I still remember the first time anime-only audiences learned that Week and Suzuka's friendship was actually a reflection of their real-life brotherhood, and it spread like bait, LMAO.

The Spe and Suzuka connection is through Yutaka Take. Take was the jockey of Suzuka during the tragic Tenno Sho Autumn of 1998, where Suzuka got hurt and to save the jockey actually sustained an even worse injury, having to be euthanized. Most people that get into uma eventually finds about this story.

Forward to the Tenno Sho Autumn of 1999, one year after the tragedy. That day Take rode Special Week to victory and in an interview after the race he said that he felt Suzuka pushing both of them forward also dedicating their win to Suzuka.

So their super friendship in the game and Week's adoration of Suzuka is a combination of both their partial kinship and their history of racing together?

In addition to Biwa Hayahide and Narita Brian, Dream Journey and Orfevre are also depicted as siblings in game. IRL they shared a mother AND a father - Oriental Art and Stay Gold (who is also in the game)

Besides their shared bond through Take I also believe Spe's overwhelming admiration for Suzuka might come from the fact that Suzuka defeated the two rivals of the Golden Generation that IRL Special Week never managed to defeat: El Condor Pasa and Grass Wonder. See the 1998 Mainichi Okan, the then undefeated Pasa and future 2x Arima Kinen winner Grass Wonder couldn't even come close to catch Suzuka in that race and it was a huge deal at the time. Tragically it was also the last win of Suzuka.
