Sham vs. Secretariat's probably the most famous American example, though JP also has Win Variation with Orfevre, Verxina with Gentildonna, Cheval Grand with Kitasan Black, Lucky Lilac with Almond Eye, and, going to jump courses, Up to Date with Oju Chosan. Regarding strong horses stuffed more by a stronger set than a primary, there's also the likes of Seeking the Dia on dirt, and Curren Bouquetd'or on turf (though you could definitely argue Chrono Genesis being Bouquetd'or's primary op). Yaeno irl was a very solid and well-regarded horse, but Heisei Sankyo, particularly Oguri Cap, stood out ahead far more.

It's a similar story regarding many horses, honestly - those who perennially hit the board or podium in G1s and have solid performances under their belts, but simply aren't a headliner because bigger names exist. Genuine from the mid-90s is also quite strong, for example, but simply isn't super well remembered, because Genuine wasn't dominant while the stories and big names were mostly elsewhere. Shinko Lovely was unironically great but the big names among JP milers tends to jump from Daitaku Helios and Yamanin Zephyr over her straight to North Flight, too.

Much as I love this manga and the art, Taiyo's depiction of children could use some work. Yaeno just looks weird on page two.
