Sorry this one took so long to get out! I had to move back in May, work stuff piled up, and I was also helping the Cinderella Gray team get back on track. Chapter 18 is probably going to take a little bit to finish, as it's redraws are quite extensive, but probably not 3 months extensive.

I'm by no means an expert on horse racing, but shouldn't such a large difference in size (representative of real horses as far as I understand) produce noticeable differences in performance between horses?

Not necessarily, Deep Impact is probably the strongest in history and he's a small horse.

Not always the case. Hishi Akebono is a fairly huge horse but can't go beyond mile distances. Deep Impact who is smaller is one of the strongest in existence.

Tamamo Cross, who was a fairly small horse, was a chaser who conquers long distance races.

Looking at the trends, generally (not always) the bigger horses (Hishi Akebono, Taiki Shuttle, Sakura Bakushin O although she's more medium, etc) got explosive power and acceleration so they excel at sprint and mile distance races while often times smaller horses (Rice Shower, Mayano Top Gun, Tamamo Cross, etc) do well at long distance races due to lower body weight and lighter steps; medium distance of course are mostly conquered by balanced medium sized horses.
