This part makes sense actually. Because they would be less of a knight and more of a meat shield.
That would take a really desperate people and masochists to actually took a job like this while getting bullied. Moreover since the swordsman job is unpopular, there won't be many meat shields anyway to be treat as something expendable.

Either they actually need that meat shield for their formation (so they'll need to build mutual trust for a lasting and a working party)
or,
they can treat him as expendable because their party doesn't actually need meat shield, so whether meat shields are rare or not will be irrelevant. (which means this is not the premise that I mentioned)

I can't say for sure since the manga didn't mention anything about it, but one way to make the premise work would be that swordsmen had become a job for slaves. Meanwhile, the school still hasn't updated the curriculum, so people start shunning those swordsmen leading to the job getting even less popular.

A mage defeated a sword saint, than it's considered as a stain in swordsman history. Implying that before that defeat, they were always superior to mage.

Suddenly after that defeat, every swordsman is useless against magic. That would imply the same spell power level that was used against the last sword saint is easily replicated by most mage. Enough to make most mages looked down to most swordsman. That's weird imo.

I still can't grasp this history.
But for now let's just see how they unfold more of this declination of swordsmanship.
My guess is it was the turning point like with firearms. For a long time, firearms were inferior to cold weapons due to how long they took to load and fire. Then people came up with firing lines and the weapons improved to the point that cold weapons couldn't even be comparable and they were relegated to people who enjoyed them as hobbyists like collectors or people who enjoy training with them for fun

I have to say tho this art is beautiful. It looks like there was a little ai intervention but other than that I feel like it's wasted on this dogshit story
