dang the high class people are realistically doing horrible things without much thought because of following tradition.

The MCs should have to encounter the lashed servants being horribly treated and their pretty much dead bodies. At least I hope they would care, or even get into their minds the consequences of their actions and how much power they have over people.

Maybe they'll realize that their current society has encourages toxic behavior towards people you have power over and how the empress mother has some similar characteristics as them. Then they'll be forced to learn to empathize and confront the flaws of the imperial system.
