This continues to take its absurd premise and content with the utmost seriousness... And revel in doing so.

This series has reinforced to me the importance of establishing an emotional connection with characters.

If you show two people fighting and I don't care about either, I feel nothing.

It's especially worse when we're obviously supposed to side with the kunoichis cuz they're the "good guys" (not to mention character design, cute grills vs ugly crazy old man) but we've been told enough about how awful and inhumane shirunin training is that it's hard to root for them when their rationale for revenge is "u killed our kind senpai"

I genuinely don't think the author even intends fo us to side with anyone. None of these people are even fighting for anything worthwhile. Characters just pop in and out with no buildup or staying power. I'd bet most of the audience doesn't even know who's who half the time.
