I really don't get the drama behind sniping a series. Wouldn't it benefit everyone if chapters came out sooner?
Put yourself in a scan group pov. You (and perhaps a crew) pumped hours into a chapter. Suddenly, another group/person released theirs before you upload yours. If it’s faster, probably higher chance of it being shittier. A few things happen:

1) suddenly you’re placed in a position of competition when you didn’t have to, nor wanted to.
2) effort felt wasted/duplicated. Many untranslated series exist and it is better for the community that more series are translated, not 2 or more translations available for each series.
3) less motivation to continue scanlating. Sniper group/person often do it for shallow reasons (online rep, monetary gains, etc) and would output a pile of shit for speed or drop the series when the highs is over. You ended up with either a trashier scanlation or worse, nobody translating it anymore.

Point 2 is probably most true since people in the scene really hate duplicating the effort. Scanlation isn’t easy work and it’s silly to have multiple groups doing work on the same series when there’s a never ending untranslated pool. We have no such luxury.

Unspoken rule is always to ask whoever picked it up first if they are OK with giving over the series, and this is true even for inactive groups (they might have a chapter that’s translated but no editor, for example). I’ve worked with solo scanlators who has 10 ch queued up but no typesetter to help them finish and release them. To readers, they’re inactive but we can’t assume that if they don’t upload it means they dropped the ball; communicating is always important to not create silly drama.
