Hmm, yeah, keychains are kinda useless, but it was kinda cool, and nothing says girls can't like cool things, too.
As for the mother, she does know about Akira's originally conflicted feelings about being a girl suddenly, and how Akira has been acting, behaving, and thinking of herself more and more as a girl lately. It's just that it has been difficult for the mother to accept and come to terms with it all, but has started accepting it and is now not pestering Akira about "boy" or "girl" stuff anymore.
