something about this manga still doesn't sit right with me. feels off in a bad way
I was thinking the same. Like, the whole premise seems centred around making them happy with being what they don't want to be. Hell, the translator doesn't even seem sure how to gender them, opting for singular they.

oh my... someone please tell this poor soul that gender-affirming care exists and they don't need to live as a woman if it causes them this much distress
"Doc, I just got the disease that changes your sex, and I'm uncomfortable in my new body."
"Start the amputations."

Bob Dylan was right: people talk about the Dark Ages like they're really over.

I think I understand why this story only has a 7.3 rating on a website with a rather forgiving rating crowd (relative to MAL, at least). If it followed the usual structure of the genderswapped FMC falling in love with the best friend MC right away, I'm sure it would've gotten a higher rating. Or if it at least didn't deviate from the cliche in a half-baked manner. The MC confessing to her right after she learned the side character doesn't return her feelings and then giving her a dumbass "challenge" didn't sit well with me. And then she decided to entertain said dumbass challenge instead of properly rejecting him. That b*tch at the end bit may have been a horrible person (and a homophobe), but she was correct about one thing-the FMC stringing the MC along. And then, out of nowhere, in the very last chapter, she falls for the MC after he protects her. As you might guess, this really didn't sit well with me.

Not to mention that it deals with gender dysphoria in a roundabout manner. I'd personally give this a 5-6. If you're interested in the genderswap genre, there are many examples that are better, and I would not recommend wasting time reading this (fortunately, it's a very quick read, so you won't be wasting too much time if you do read it).

Crazy how many people will read this sort of self-insert fantasy while behaving transphobic IRL. Like damn y'all actually think you'd get dropped into this situation and come out with a girlfriend? Hayami would DESPISE you

FR this should've definitely gone the transmasc route IMO. I don't have terrible feelings about the ending, since it seems to be about accepting Hayami as someone still questioning their gender and not letting trans/homophobic abuse convince you to stop supporting them. However, so much of the manga before that point served to demonstrate how Hayami was quite sure of their gender and didn't like the new body and expectations at all. I feel like both the setup and conclusion of the story were, in isolation, surprisingly trans-supportive, but they didn't match each other well.
