Pretty interesting revelation, that the color jobs were dangerous only to those who could see the colors.

At least, that's how I'm reading it? Or does that mean they weren't dangerous to Hama/Yume specifically? Because plenty of other people died during those color jobs.
jobs are dangerous regardless if u can see the colors but if u see the colors u will be cursed (unrelated to the dangerousness of the jobs)

Glad these chapters got released as a batch. This has to be one of the best fourth wall breaks I've seen. I know this series won't ever get adapted into an anime, but it does make me wonder how this twist would be adapted.

Also I went back to skim the Woodland Rescue Party arc. I think one of the rescuers, Umeki, could see the green at the start.

In 141 he saw a corpse and it was green, but then on the first page of 142 the same corpse had no green. Then page two had green on the panels with him. The green seemed to be particularly centered on corpses at first, because in one panel Hama saw a weird baby thing, and only part of the panel was green around the baby. She wasn't in the green part, but then she and Yume almost killed each other in a green panels... But they snapped out of it while apologizing to Jun.

So my theory: the green represents a curse that spreads and directly "possesses" or "infects" people.

That said, Hama might not be able to see red...? I went to the ship chapter (172) because I remembered that one has red, and some of the characters there can DEFINITELY see it because they singled someone out for having a red cross. I'm going to skim the earlier arcs for any with red, and pay close attention to how people react.

Kuroiwa Cases

93-95: Special Cleaner. Red first appeared with something inside a closet...? Hard to describe, but worth noting later Hama saw some humanoid thing inside the closet but that panel wasn't red. Red appeared with bodies, and overlapped with injuries on a single page in 93. Kuroiwa had red spots around his hand and face in one panel on that page. 94 notably ended with a red page when their other team member said they'd stay, and he ultimately died. So the red may have indicated he was already cursed.

99-101: Cotton Glove Dropper. The red didn't appear much until the final chapter, and would overlap with the giant sky fingers smushing people's heads. One smushing panel had red specifically around a person's eyes. Interestingly there were panels that were red with just speech bubbles. First someone asking "What kind of job is this?", and then "Stand up" to a guy who was in shock after seeing a person get killed. Next time was them yelling the name of another person who got squashed.

Back then I theorized that the hands would target anyone who paid too much attention to the ritual (you can see my comment on 101 for more details), and the panels that were red involved people directly acknowledging what was happening. So, I think the red was an indicator of the curse/danger tied to the sky hands.

111-113: Proxy Grave Visitor. That one was about visiting a grave haunted by spirits of a massacred village. Red first appeared on a panel with someone's body at the end of 111 surrounded by spirits. Then 112 had it appear in the background of a character mentioning "Er, chief... About that video I took..." Said video showed the spirits, but the video wasn't red. Red appeared in the final pages of 113 showing a lot of bodies and the spirits smiling and praying. So, red seemed to indicate the spirits about to or already taking action.

172-174: Ship Crewmate. Opens up with a guy's eyes bleeding red, and red margins with white gaps shaped like a cross. Red next appeared highlighting bits of a body being eaten by seagulls. It was also in the background of the same guy flashing back to various atrocities he committed. The red interestingly highlighted someone's face with a red cross, and the organizers thought he was "the child of god" whose sacrifice would guarantee eternal paradise. I think they saw the cross, though that guy wasn't the chosen one. Then everyone BUT Hama ended up with bleeding eyes. Chapter ended with someone finding the inverse of the cross, which canceled out paradise. Final page was red with the text "TOO BAD EVERYONE. HOW TRULY UNFORTUNATE."

184-186: Shrine Guides. This shrine is all about people with curses, people go there in hopes of being purified. Red first appears with some giant overlooking the path. It then appears with an image posted online of Kouta, a boy who'd gone missing. The red panels after that were all about a man named Hoshina seeing Kouta's spirit and getting stuck on the path, and it's revealed he killed Kouta and was cursed by his spirit. He went to the shrine to try to get purified, but was spirited away instead.

One important note: I don't think they got that job from Kuroiwa. He did appear at the end of the first chapter looking at a text from Hama's dad, but I think they may have been directly hired by the shrine.

203-205: Auction House. Only appeared at the very end, and only as notes from the Manga One Editorial Department. So, it broke the fourth wall.

207-209: Human Billboard. Interestingly, the red only appeared in the last chapter. It came up in relation to an idol for the Black Tokyo Party, who worship "the Black Sun", and related to gathering a tribute for their idol. Had some red kanji say "TRIBUTE COMPLETE" as people floated up, and ended with the Black Tokyo Party spokesperson talking to the idol. Interestingly his panels were white but the page had red margins, and the page with the idol was all red.

And... That's it. Those should be all the red cases. This was very interesting. If anyone wants to reread those cases and add their own thoughts, go ahead!

Plenty of analysis and revelations here so I'll just idly comment on some of the aspects that stood out to me this chapter:

shit posted early accidentally ok whatever

  • Curses, burial-site, remains, discouraging theft - gigantic windowless monument - immortal being - safe to conclude the analogy here is supposed to be the pyramids of Egypt except cubic
  • On page 2, building itself almost looked like the panel outline - so, the deliberate connection we're supposed to make is tying together this cube with breaking the fourth wall (in a literal sense), I liked that subtle detail
  • Again, "Outside appearance" of the little cubes looks like a picture-frame when viewed in profile, not super subtle in retrospect but yeah
  • The little people almost look like some plastering trowels I've seen or paint scrapers, notably those tools are useful if you want to make flat surfaces and sharp corners (I think there's something here)
  • Scribbly boxes - they look less like squished and consumed surveyors, and rather more like the strokes of pen and outlines that constitute them
  • The directions that Yume are reading out seem to go around in circles but that's also consistent with an inwards spiral, nice touch
  • Lol yeah from the perspective of those workers that would be a miracle and they would SO be getting drinks on the house

Very useful recap, ty. I remember when reading these, I vaguely noticed they seemed to be more "surveying/mapping the unknown" than the non-red jobs (which usually had at least the appearance of some form of exchange or mediation of value). Now when you put them together like that, their assigned roles now seem like an obfuscation since nobody signs up for the job of "human minesweeper" voluntarily.

Ngl when kuroiwa first appeared I fkn hated him. Felt like he was heartless and callous and wouldn't even help hama without first putting them thru a bunch of grey jobs

But this chapter made me completely reevaluate who he really was and his own tragic circumstances

So they were actively sealing those curses. But now there is no replacement for the Kuroiwa because they sealed them all up? So no more chapters related to the colors?

Sir! You are violating my personal space bubble. I thank you for your service, but that is no excuse for trying to poke my face.

Man, if only that redo god still around, lots of this won't happen...when do we get confirmation there's no longer any redo again?
Also, seems like second to last page has many red text on it, anyone can read it?

Absolutely masterful. A beautiful long con.... I especially love he swap of red and black for the mysterious cube.

What terrible curses linger in japan...
