It may need to be voluntary. But also, it's just a knife. Knives are scary and a deterrent, but won't be as useful if someone is determined to fight back.

What was in the bathroom? My guess is corpse of cult leader of something like that. But if it was on ground floor, every previous detective probably opened it, and yet they still could go further up to "jar", so it looks like bathroom itself wasn't that dangerous?

Whatever was in the bathroom was probably enough to get you in trouble, and the upper floor probably sealed the deal. I will say that this issue EXEMPLIFIES the strength of our protagonists and why they have value in a setting like this: they know when to back out, when to say "yeah, that's enough." What's most important is each other... And I also love how the detective girl has a use too! In every story where she's present, there has been a genuine mystery to solve, paired with the horror! Here she puts her connections and her own mundane wits to use: rather than complete self-reliance like our protagonists exhibit, she's willing to go to the right people, call the police, things of that sort.
