I just can't stand the bootlicking protagonists in stories like this. They're always portrayed as "kind," but it just comes off as pathetic naivety to me. His family literally laughs in his face, treating him like he's subhuman, and his reaction is:

Thank them for what? Dude could get kicked in the balls and still lick their shoes clean for daring to sully them with his filthy self. This is just too Japanese for my taste. He's the type of person who'd overwork himself to death for a shitty company, and then thank them for the privilege.
You do understand this is an abused child that was barely tolerated for the money they could get keeping him and the free labor he did for them right?

The only close people he ever known all, without any exeption couldn't wait to get rid of him. You think that inspire self confidence?

Well, you're simply wrong. Literally the next chapter we're introduced to two people who have known him and shown him kindness. In chapter 16, we're introduced to his childhood friend, further proving he DID in fact have other people close to him who cared for him.

Though, even apart from that, I'm not saying it's impossible for him to be like that. I just personally can't stand him.
