... Methinks that something wrong must've happened during the most recent memory-archival-and-formatting session, because I have no other explanation for why the association would keep her around doing assignments if she's completely useless.

@Akikako: What? No! I meant that her memory of needed skills was accidentally erased, either due to human error or machine fault.

The emotional yo-yo with this series is going to be the death of me, but I can't stop reading...

@MarqFJA87 I think Ponko was useless before that. The end of page 15 in the flashback at the hospital has someone dropping something, apologizing, then some loud sfx. His wife says "Oh, that must be that cheerful little nurse." Then on page 16 you see a nurse that looks exactly like Ponko going into his wife's room with another nurse. That's probably where his wife met Ponko, and it sure looks like she was already clumsy/useless at that point.

It could still be an accident in a previous memory wipe, but if so it was before the most recent one.

@Betony She should, since she's apparently an Asimovian robot using the Three Laws of Robotics. (She mentioned the first law in the first chapter.) The third of those is "A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law." First law is about not injuring humans, second is about following orders. That means she's programmed for self preservation as long as doing so won't disobey an order or harm a human.

Well robots are expensive, probably. But in this case, since someone specifically requested her despite knowing of her faults, they probably figured they'd just make a little more money off of her.
