@dsid2814 We already have programs underway that are transforming pilots into mobile drone operators, with projects like Boeing Autonomous Systems' "Loyal Wingman" project, EADS' "Barracuda" and Kratos' "XQ-58 Valkyrie", all of which is expected to make them almost completely autonomous by the end of their development cycles. UCAV tech has been here for a while now and putting an AI on a jet isn't much different than putting it on a drone. AI has already proven itself against real pilots in simulated dogfights and there are real life human-vs-AI dogfight duel sessions scheduled for 2024.
And the "past" in the manga is a WWIII scenario that happens in a near-future version of our world, and given that the F-35 only entered service in 2015, it most likely takes place no sooner than that timeframe.

@dsid2814 The war in the manga was not WWII. There's been plenty of hints that it's a future war that may or may not have been WWIII, the fact that the war used F-35s being one of them. The reason the manga doesn't feel like it's in the future is because it's set in a small, largely isolated, village where nothing really changes. Insulting @Oured for providing you with some facts that disagree with your theory was uncalled for.

@manabi I second this, ch. 1 already tells us that the current timeline is farther into the future than us. The flashback timeline definitely isn't WW2, their cars and laptops should be further proof of this. It should be around our time, and the current timeline should be some decades after.

However, to be nitpicky, I disagree with @Oured that AI is advanced enough already to take on the fighter pilot role. We are getting there, with the examples he's put out, but not yet there. @Snakeykid1 They've advanced in minor ways that help them out, like the carpenter having some robot helpers. Largely they don't need all the advanced technology and so they go on living their lives similar to how past generations did. People who stay in small towns like that tend to prefer a slower-paced life. The ones that want to experience the new technology tend to leave and not come back.
