I think him searching up Professor Eba instead of just "Eba" means that Eba's public persona was an expert on these subjects so he's trying to find some clues related to where he is

That's a nice theory! It'd make sense if he only is looking for authors with the name Eba to look it up when he finds some matches.

It does look like "rule of cool" though. And same with the money laundering subplot, to me it just looks like the author needed to make something other than plot about betting and came up with some criminal related stuff.
