Them not getting together right away makes perfect sense for how dead inside gotou is. You can't be in a successful relationship with that kind of pain. I know that all too well T_T

Getting together after she's a complete person is the only way it could have worked out for them. She needed time to heal.

Honestly I kinda feel like this ending kinda sucks on a thematic level. Gotou's whole issue is that she makes herself into what people want and expect of her rather than actually thinking about herself and what she wants, and doesn't reveal her honest feelings to those who care about her, so in the end she decides to... leave the person she likes, and to go and get a job so she can be a more productive member of society. Like conceptually, I understand that this is supposed to be about self discovery, but it also feels like Gotou is, once again, deciding not to pursue what makes her happy in favour of trying to be a more conventionally successful person.

Pacing wise though, I don't mind this two volume structure too much. It short, obviously, but the important scenes didn't feel rushed to me, and the story always felt pretty low scope.

Overall, I still enjoyed this series but I do wish that Gotou and Rei could have worked through Gotou's issues together rather than by herself.

I think it was her way to heal herself and prove that she too can do it like Shigisawa and without the help of a man or another person. Maybe it's her way to say that she too can be independent and choose what she wants to do in her life.

Until now she was completely vulnerable, to her ex-husband and to Shigisawa. Being dependable in a relationship tends to make things difficult when you want to ends it or you face domestic violence. So yeah, It was a wise choice of her to not be in relationship before stabilizing herself.

In another hands, she could have ask Shigisawa to help her found a job. But maybe she wanted to challenge herself.

Putting that aside, we are still in the register of being useful to the society. If she can't be a wife and make babies, so she will be a salary woman who work for the capitalism.
She could have found another way to fullfil her life, a hobby, an association to help people in the need, launch a campaign to demand the gouvernement to give a minimum wage to all housewives so they can't be completely dependable of their husband, or something else.
But yeah, you need money to live.

The way I understood it is that she felt in debt to people (Shigisawa and her husband) and she was kind of a chameleon - didn't ever have her own wants/needs, just took the form of whatever best suited those around her. Neither of those are good feelings/forms for someone who wants to be taken seriously. In order for her to feel like a contributing member to a relationship (and sure, society, but I think that's a secondary goal), specifically one with Shigisawa-san, she needed to feel like an equal and have her own contributions, needs, and wants - to be a whole person. I think this is how we see that Gotou-san truly loves Shigisawa-san. She wants to grow and become more herself for her so she can treasure Shigisawa-san as much as she's been treasured by her. I do agree that it would have been cool to see them work together, but I think Gotou-san needed to feel independent and whole first, and gain the strength that comes with paving your own way without feeling indebted or having the "could I have done this on my own or am I still just a dependent person" doubts in her mind. Now it's Rei-chan's turn to learn how to turn off the doubts and truly believe in Saya-san's love for her. That's the continuation of the story I'd like to see. Alas, it seems that it's over, but in my own future I've created for them, Rei-chan doesn't take long to learn to trust in Saya-san (and remember to call her that ). ❤️

As some people think it was axed, I think not. I guess it was planned to end briefly. I'm still happy with the ending, no long drama to see. It's just it was more focused on Shigisawa's life than Gotou after she left for a year and a half.

So what if they didn't bump in to each other after 2 years apart? Couldn't think of any other way? Or god forbid, some effort from Saya? Can't expect much from an axed ending i guess.
