For all the anti-war dialogue, this series has always had excessive combat scenes. Enough to make any combat series blush.

Those people who naively compare it to berserk do have some naive points. If you read it textless u'd be forgiven for thinking that it was a bloodbath.

So yeah, many chapters wasted on uninteresting bland politics baltic war trash.

But we can't get a few peaceful trading or SoL chapters that can actually match the shoehorned anti-war-message.

Even peaceful chapters can't go without some drama or arguing, someone always gets dragged into a fight, usually. This chapter is an exception.

Fuck the timeskip. Though I get if he's too busy to research a whole city.

I read the series for the writing but the focus on fights never matches the dialogue. I almost wish he was writing a combat junkie protagonist sometimes.

I'll accept this time skip if the time skipped portion gets made into the anime. It would be for the best rather than doing barely the first third of the manga if we're lucky.

I’m surprised people have forgotten that this isn’t even the first or longest (not even including the childhood flashback) timeskip the series has done before. Ketil's Farm arc had a timeskip of three years within it. From fall/winter of 1015 to fall of 1018.
Yukimura likely did a timeskip now for similar reasons he did back then. In the same way showing three whole years of forest clearing and plowing wouldn’t be relevant to the narrative, Yukimura decided spending all that time on eastward journeys outside of the North Atlantic wouldn’t be relevant to the story he was telling.

@Liar You woukd be surprised that actually a lot of vikings in Constantinople as known as Varangian Guards. The Rus back there is Viking to moving to the eastern Europe and foward to the south, they even attacked Constantinople some time. Rus is the way of Finnish people introduced Viking to Slavs people. Since 11th century, the Rus was absorbed to Eastern Slavs and become today Russian.

So is it implied that Thorfinn converted to Christianity? His wife is a Christian, she would have had to celebrate the sacrament of matrimony. Why did the author skipped over this? Thorfinn was slowly realising the savagery of pagans, he even came to realise that Valhalla was actually Hell. The story for the longest time seemed to be pointing to his conversion. I'm a bit disappointed by the developments.

My brain just died after reading this nonsense. Read it text-less? Do you realize how stupid this sounds?

Hey guys, translator here again. I've had some people read over the chapter and they provided me with some translation corrections. It's nothing that changes the story or plot, but just things I misinterpreted. They are as follows:
- On page 8 where Karli is biting Ylva, she asks "Whose kid is this", the next bubble says "that's biting me". The original text was hard to read and said bullying instead of biting, which I found odd, so I changed it to biting because it made more sense. But that bubble isn't from Ylva, it's Karli saying "don't bully my dad". It didn't occur to me that Karli could speak already!
- On page 10 where the townsfolk are talking about Thorfinns grand fleet, one mentions how much money they made. But he was actually commenting on how much money they COULD make with that fleet. How would he know much money they already made. I mistook "fleet" for "voyage".
- On page 16 where Thorfinn says "I love you and Karli" Gudrid says "I don't know". I really didn't know what to make of that bubble because it was such weird Japanese, turns out it was another one of Karlis baby talk and he asks "what happened mommy" or "what's wrong mommy". Also Thorfinn says "You stay here with Karli" instead of "I love you", speedreading error on my part.
- On page 29 the letter from Norway Halfdan is talking about is from Sigurd. A better translation would be "He sent a letter from Norway".

Thanks to everyone who read the chapter! For next month we have a proper scanlation team ready with multiple translators as well as cleaners, typesetters and redrawers!

@poemofdevil

a surprising number of people dont really pay attention to the plot and just go for the combat

the point was for all the crap the characters continuously sprout about anti-war in text boxes, the visuals is always combat or conflict. Maybe the author could at least have them match sometimes or it might just be better to ignore one of the two.

whatever, i finished my rant of how crappy it was to sit through the chapters of the baltic sea war. For all of thorfinn's talk of peace since the prologue ended he sure gets into unwanted fights all the time. plus the series has always been fight oriented despite what "peace" crap the characters sprout so there wasn't even much point to the rant.

The Viking trade route to Constantinople didn't pass through the Mediterranean sea.

They went through modern day Russia and Eastern Europe using the rivers to eventually reach the black sea. Thats why they went througt the Baltic sea in the first place.

Fun fact: the Slavs used to call the Viking invaders and eventual occupants "Rus" which is how Russia got its name. Land of the Rus (Vikings)

How do you miss the point this hard? The whole thing going on here is that Thorfinn wants peace but it's really hard to make not-fighting happen when you're constantly mingling with Vikings and people making political power plays because they're constantly fighting. That's not the visuals not matching the dialogue, whatever that even means, that's the things actually happening in the world being at odds with the protagonist's ideals, which is the whole fucking point of the manga.
If you want a shallow manga where the protagonist says "no fighting, peace is good," and everyone instantly listens to him and stops fighting, or one where everyone just fights all the time with no meaningful conversation ever, read any other shonen manga.

Dear God, what an awful translation. Literal word to word translation, no adaptation. You would have achieved the same thing with google translate. Please stop.
