Him getting surrounded? When he can infect others at range undetected? When he could infect all 5 at the same time without them even realizing what's happened?
How did this idiot ever become a researcher?
I don't mind stupid protagonists, but at least don't give them a job/title where one might reasonably expect a minimum level of intelligence. It's distracting. Or at least start the story by explaining how he reached his station, so we know he's supposed to be stupid.
