There is quite a lot of religious discussion over that sin that takes into consideration the definition of worship from biblical times and the like which was different from the modern definition. While some more literal interpretations would include anything even streamers as blasphemous, there is flexibility as a form of respect. As in, if you are not worshipping it as your God, it isn't worship of a false idol. The acceptance of Saint worship fall in this definition as a form of respect and recognition of them as servants of God for example, you aren't recognizing a saint as some existence rivaling or superior to God.
