I don't think it's stupid, it adds context. Not everyone knows or cares about the exchange rates and being told X00 yen doesn't says much to them.
It is true, however, than those scans who include conversions do it on the page borders and include several of the most used currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, NOK (this one as a joke)...

I don't think it was stupid, the dollar is a very well known currency around the english speaking world (this manga is translated to english after all).

I get where you came from. 1 dollar to 100 yen gives a good feel for what its worth and the spending power 500 has in japan, though the yen has dropped in value.

That said, when in doubt just leave it at default
