I don't know what's worse, receiving confirmation that your loved ones are dead, or being left with with uncertainty and false hope that they could come back home one day.
@Tersione From personal experience I can say that the latter is subjective. According to my mother, even if a message about death came, many people still believed that it was some kind of mistake (war is not the best place for bureaucracy) and the deceased will return. This is one of the reasons why after the war, books and films have always been popular for a long time about how the falsely declared dead returned and found out that his wife had already married another.
