He is definitely an asshat, but from what I gather the reason he has turned out like this is that I assume his wife died in childbirth and was tasked with the overwhelming task of raising a child as a single parent in Korea of all places, which must be overwhelming.
He can't really balance his work and family life because he wants to make sure they are financially well off and he wants to deliver a game that the CEO of the company will like instead of something that he actually would like to play himself to get himself a nice bonus and stock options.
A lot of single parents who lost their partners tend to suffer from frozen grief, where the overwhelming situation they are in forces them to put their grief aside and focus on the more immediate task of taking care of their child, but that grief is never actually gone but rather it lingers and it tends to manifest in other ways that are not immediately obvious.
I already feel quite sad for his character is obvious that he does really love his daughter but was handed an awful hand of being a single parent in Korea where most people already struggle to make ends meet due to the obscenely high costs of living, I really hope that when he finally can make his way back, that the first person he seed is his daughter again.
