from what I've understood, they got into random conflicts that turned violent. indirectly, the royalty caused their deaths by not accepting their marriage which led the couple to get into the situations that took their life

Rereading this, and was struck this time by how well the artist portrayed his instant smitten state just with the way every look at her from his POV is framed and laser-focused on her face, with emphasis on her eyes. You can just feel the love at first sight he's experiencing.
