That's the worst part -- I think Mei is supposed to be sympathetic, if you consider Fushimi-sensei's taste in characters. We're supposed to at least partially empathize with her feelings for Chiaki and wrinkle our nose about what a "pervert" Chiaki is. We're supposed to think of her conservative mindset as a quirk, not an explanation for why she's a piece of shit. (Which she is, btw)

I would love to be eventually proven wrong about this, by the way. I really would. But I wouldn't put money on it.
