So I'm going to spoiler tag this, just in case. I have not read any source material, but I feel like I can see this coming a mile a way.

Spoiler: Just a guess, but maybe...

She mentioned that a knight was killed attempting to defend her, during a prior death. Since this is not a regression story (she is being born into new lives in the future of her old lives), the knight might possibly be reborn as well. Add the fact that he didn't even blink when she said this is her fourth life. So I'm guessing Ralph is the knight in her first life, died defending the woman he loved, recognizes that she's the same woman, and is determined not to let her die again.
