I think a more charitable reading would be "author notes that she's met men who make jokes like that and, it being 1993, is somewhat limited in the degree to which she can call them on it," but yeah, that was a rough page. (Author was/is an outspoken abuse survivor, just for some background.)Me reading this chap as a wholesome educational story about childbirth.
"Author jokes about fathers wanting to stick their dicks in their teethless baby daughter's mouths"
Jesus fucking Christ author why!?
better to express/show product of its time rather than pretending it didn't happenMe reading this chap as a wholesome educational story about childbirth.

The flip side is it also tells there was just more trust and casualness in society because people can hear jokes like that and go "yeah no shit, nobody's actually gonna do that"better to express/show product of its time rather than pretending it didn't happen
morbid curiosity and tasteless joke like these better get addressed
The internet just simply gotten too soft nowadays. If it were in the old days, no one would bat an eye for a joke like this because they know it's a joke and don't feel the need to over react. Was the joke really that offensive? Maybe because I've grown up with shocking humour, but I don't really get the outrage.
Had the guy said he tried it, or it was implied or something, I'd think differently though.
To me it just doesn't seem any more offensive than a standard south park, or Rick & Morty, joke.

I much prefer the mentality from back then where you'd think "it's obviously a fucking joke." Seriously, there's no need to be offended. My mom told me the story of how, after my uncle babysat one of my cousins for a weekend, the next time she (my cousin) saw him, she ran up to him and tried to pull down his pants."yeah no shit, nobody's actually gonna do that"
I know right, what's with these soft pussies these days?? Don't they know a father joking about sticking his penis in his just-born infant daughter's mouth is peak humor???? Especially when you say it to a soon-to-be mother, now that's comedic! Was the joke really that offensive? Maybe because I've grown up with shocking humour, but I don't really get the outrage.

Nice bait and switch buddy! Looks like we have another fan of shocking humour. Gave me a good chuckle. You're scum, shit beneath a pig's foot.
When you make an offensive joke, you accept the consequences of people being angry at you. Because that shit actually happens to some people. And those people don't want their real trauma to be reduced to a joke. So they're perfectly justified in being offended. For the same reason I find them tasteless even if I haven't experienced anything like it myself. I don't think most people offended by those jokes are trying to get the jokesters into, like, legal trouble. But they have the right to not like your jokes. That's not because of any sticks up their asses, that's human rights.I much prefer the mentality from back then where you'd think "it's obviously a fucking joke." Now that I think about it, I cannot for the life of me imagine a father that would be okay with someone making a joke about shoving a penis in their newly born daughter's mouth. I'd expect to get decked for that. And I don't see why the father himself making that joke is any different.
As far as jokes go, yes. It's about as (potentially) offensive as they get. Up there with jokes about race, rape, genocide, etc.Was the joke really that offensive? Maybe because I've grown up with shocking humour, but I don't really get the outrage.
