This is his way of making a living, or just making some side money. These folks aren't evil lol. Shady? Sure, who cares, its easy money to him, and let's not forget he is right with saying he bought it, fair trade, even if the item was stolen, so if they want it back then either offer more money or thanks to his sister's forcing hand just help out in the store so he doesn't have to work.
