It's probably because there are other people competing for the succession and the guy was pushed out because of this, who knows.

But like, this wouldn't do that for a drug cartel which is ruled via influence, power and money. A little PR failure would mean nothing to a literal drug cartel XD.

I don't think the Drug Cartels hide that, though they only operate semi-openly in Mexico. I can only reason that he accidentally revealed a front company in America or something .

Honestly, I think it would actually be safer if she is with you, sure their security's may be good but while the guy is deranged apparently he is still smart enough to not go frontally against the protagonist. If he is determined enough(as he seems to be) he would just need one gap and his gun to take her out, with you around she would be safer. Though I get that seeing get die again and again must be traumatizing and you don't want to see that again
