No, really, I don't get why he can't just make the story that she is an overseas friend either.
Also, when he had to explain archaic jp lifestyle to her, I wondered why he couldn't have put more effort in finding something that could implicitly teach the actual level of technology better. Though I suppose it is really hard to find an educational show that is present-day (as opposed to centuries past) without having a mad scientist and plot-devices popping up that use completely made-up science. So probably safer to go for the archaic ones.

Nosy housewives gossiping like hen bitches is a reality. Most of the time, it's harmless chatter but if you do something bad, they can easily destroy your reputation in the neighbourhood even without meaning to. This happens more in light residential suburbs and less in dense apartment complexes and seems to happen mostly among older Japanese wives.
As for why he's saying she's a relative, the Japanese people are actually very traditional. Japanese people do not easily accept changes in values. So her living with him would be considered 'scandalous' and can be a point of gossip but unlike Muslim countries, they don't consider it a bad or sinful thing. It's just along the line of "Oh look, that man has a blue pigeon!"
He probably doesn't want to deal with all the teasing. This also happens with youngsters. Like what happens with the librarian in this chapter. Difference is, she knows when to stop, some people may not have such tact.

Though it is not entirely without basis. He can claim that she had plastic surgery or that it is a birth-defect, but it is probably more believable if he is a relative. But yeah, he could say the same thing even if he went with "friend" or "gf".
