I think what’s going on is that Mako never fully got over her inferiority complex, and she’s already stated when talking with Chinatsu that one day she believes she won’t be able to keep up with Gaju. Seeing how well Tatara and Chinatsu performed, and how different Tatara is for Chinatsu than he was for her only made that idea more substantive in her mind. Mako saying that is more of an indictment on Gaju imo, he hasn’t been able to express how good she is and how much he believes in her like Tatara was able to do for Chinatsu. Chinatsu also lacks confidence and has a lot of insecurities like Mako, but she was able to dance freely cause she knew Tatara believed in her more than she believed in herself. Gaju has yet to do that, even though Mako is an excellent dancer, probably really close to Shizuku in skill of not equal.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, Mako and Gaju have yet to win anything, they debuted at the same time as Kiyoharu and Shizuku, and on that same conversation with Chinatsu she stated that Gaju and her wanted results, so they’re focusing on Latin. Tatara won his “debut” with Chinatsu, so that’s got to be weighing on her mind as well.
