gotta hand it to him, the trap that got the girl was beautiful, he knows the classic : ''pick up the severed head then press it against ur chest and then cry unto the heavens'' trope that happens when an ally suddenly loses its head, and he interrupted in step 1, fucking nice

I kinda wish it was more established like game rules where we, the reader, know exactly what traps he is able to make, mana costs, cast points, cooldowns, etc. Cuz as it stands, for all we know there could be a medusa trap that turns you to stone when you look at it, or maybe he can conjure an invisible banana peel.

It's hard to really grasp the stakes of a scene when we don't know how far the protag is being pushed to his limits. Take Death Note for instance. We know exactly what Light can do, we know exactly what L can do. So when they clash, the viewer can start theory-crafting plans as the scene is unfolding. And when the big twist happens, it's all the more rewarding. Here, nice bait and switch at the end, but it's not clever cuz the reader never knew this antlion trap existed in the first place. Makes it feel kinda cheap.

I really like the idea of real dungeon trapping but what makes trapping fun is the planning that goes into making it. If you can instantly or extremely quickly cast death traps around your targets, how is that so much different from just confronting your prey face-to-face and using your standard fantasy fireball instead? The last trap does however make me hopeful for more intricate planning and deception as well as the fact that the MC now can properly prepare a dungeon without being pressed for time

@Aretheus it was established that they're all physical objects being conjured or altered in the case of the antlion trap. So there are some rules established. those rules may change as he comes to a deeper understanding of it but for now the rules seemed pretty clear. As for the bait and switch at the end, I feel it wasn't that weak. If all he needs is time to generate a proper trap then of course stalling and using the princess as bait the same way he did the child's head makes perfect sense. Pit traps are just as classic as the arrow and spike traps that were displayed. Honestly, the giant wompa morningstar finisher feels less in line with what we were given that he could do than the antlion because it manifested in midair while everything else sprung from the surfaces of the dungeon.

That aside, you are right that the L v Light mind games are infinitely better, but those are also built over how many chapters? This is roughly equivalent to the point where Light's experimenting with the Deathnote to see what it can actually do and deciding what to do with it. The only difference is that this had high stakes attached to it. I don't EXPECT that the conflicts will actually be as good as Deathnote either though.

Still an edgy, selfish prick who may not deserve a redemption arc. I've never been so happy to NOT see a romance tag on an isekai.

@icarushector Certainly, the execution isn't all bad. I like that the MC had to start using gradually smaller and smaller traps to visually get across the limits of his power without using some stupid floating GUI like most isekais.

It's okay. What I always refer to as my ideal fantasy magic system is (https://www.novelupdates.com/series/shini-yasui-koshaku-reijo-to-shichi-nin-no-kikoshi/). I don't play D&D so I can't vouch for it, but I hear it basically rips it off. But what I like is that every spell the MC can use is a specific wand in her bag. So the reader always knows what spells she has available to solve any given problem.

You're in this do or die scene and running through your options like "Does featherfall help here? No. The wand of castling will get me killed. I can't use a vaporize spell on this guy since he can regenerate." And it builds all this lovely tension. I didn't get that feeling from this manga, but like I said, it's perfectly fine.

@Aretheus the Abyss Slayer! Yes! That system is tight. The alchemist side anyway. The actual mages are a little more fluid if I remember correctly. But yeah, that sort of wand system is pretty much straight from DND. The component explanations can get dry but it is a good choice to set your gold standard to for a hard fantasy magic system.
