You'd be surprised how often this happens. It's less nowadays but back in the day you'd just have the companies go under or drop a series but not give up the license. VIZ has done this as well with series like Gintama

@owlette No one will pick up this as it has been licensed. Translation groups will drop a series when it is officially getting an English release. The only way you can read it now is buying the manga when it comes out in English. And we don't use the word " currently publishing" for fan-translated manga.

@Qayin And risk going to jail or pay a fortune for violating copyright law? No one would be that stupid. Several translators from my country had been punished and paid a fine for that. Finding out your address through the internet is easy.

@miyako19 : You know that it doesn't matter if it's licencied or not from a legal point of view? The japanese publisher could sue translators even if the serie is not licencied in the west.

Maybe if you tie your normal username and banking info to your translating presence, but if you're trying not to be found out it's very likely you won't be, not with the effort they'd put in for a couple guys translating comic books.

Yeah, that's why my follows lists here and elsewhere have new chapters from Mahoutsukai no Yome, Tomo-chan, Watamote, Kaguya-sama, Dr Stone, Tsurezure Children, Chio-chan... Need I go on?

@miyako19 there's plenty of licensed manga that still get scanlanted online, so i don't see why there would be an issue with another series. it usually just hurts the manga if the only option is to buy the official translation. i understand if the official publishing group asks the scanlators to stop and threaten with legal issues but they haven't mentioned that

Indeed, a good VPN will be enough to cover your IP Address too (which is the primary method of getting someone's location), no one's diligent enough to dig into it and most DMCA Strikes stem from easily penetrable sites since it's mostly A.I. Bots. If there's no profiteering to be made, then companies mostly just leave scans alone.
