MangaPlus bot is back? Yay!
I'm not going to lie: the workaround Hakuri found for backstory exposition this arc is quite clever. She cannot resort to long flashbacks like she did in the Gheeriv arc? Well then, she'll just incorporate memories as something characters must live through in the present instead, through the amazing plot device that is magic.
Cathié and Tania get to have history prior to meeting Nona and Miramira, except this time, the action is not painfully trapped in the past. Narrative tension is maintained, and readers get to unravel mysteries along with Miramira.
Onto the chapter itself. I somehow completely missed the parallels between Cathié and mages before this chapter, which in hindsight were extremely obvious. It sends a message effectively too: having Tania and Cathié discuss the ways they are restricted humanized both of them. I especially love how Tania encourages Cathié to not let others make her smaller, befitting her Quovelta membership, yet forgets that mean words hurt. Good writing!
Speaking of Tania: Tania is a goober confirmed. Yes, she threatened Cathié with death, but that is just goofy Quovelta activities. I personally think she is a tsundere big softie. The fact that she is seeking to forgive says a lot about her.
I feel like Cathié's memories are almost an inverse of Raloud's memories. Instead of an initially coerced mage cooperating with a Bureau officer, this arc has an initially coerced human cooperating with a Quovelta member. Through dialogue and the exchanging of vulnerability, both parties learn to trust the other. It is pretty sweet.
