Ah, the joys of a surveillance state.

I'm amused how from her perspective this would parse like a story where you step in to the peaceful friendly village except <i>not all is as it seems</i>, don't defy the mayor and his cunning plans or you'll find out just how terrifying this sleepy town can be...

...except honestly it's actually like that, isn't it? Minus the plot tension, I mean.

I can't believe it. Is this a complaint against the Chinese Big Brother system? Wait until she discovers the social credit system. This level of surveillance and restriction was unthinkable in her time.
Honestly, I feel like not being able to walk around with a friend without nosy neighbors pressing me with questions would be far more stressful than having to worry about my social credit in front of the surveillance cameras…
