The only explanation is that she's magically speaking and understanding modern Chinese, because Middle Chinese would be completely unintelligible to Xu Qing. However, modern written Chinese would still be intelligible to some degree for her

They spoke Middle Chinese during the Tang era. But Mandarin went through a lot of sound shifts compared to other Sinitic languages that preserved more features of Middle Chinese.

Still, the differences are important enough that it would probably be hard to understand right away, and moreover for her to understand spoken modern Mandarin. If you take the title of this series, and supposing that the words and word order would have remained the same, here’s a phonetic comparison of both versions, according to modern reconstructions.

So yeah, there’s definitely an air of family, just like you might have between Latin and Italian, but I’m convinced the “lǎopo“ would have as much trouble getting modern Mandarin as a Roman soldier would have understanding Rai 1.
