Say I'm reading the Sober Scans version of https://mangadex.org/title/2b22a9ca-7620-4826-aff4-c8c91129dc61/

What I expect:
[Going to the next chapter] Ch.5 -> Ch.6 (On the same group)
[Going to the prev chapter] Ch.6 -> Ch.5 (On the same group)

What I got:
[Going to the next chapter] Ch.5 (on preferred group) -> Ch.6 (of another group)
[Going to the prev chapter] Ch.6 (on preferred group) -> Ch.6 (of another group)
After which, you'd have to manually switch groups.

Blocking the other group won't serve as a workaround either, since that's already a known bug yet to be fixed:

Additional Information:
The different chapter numbering for the volumes may play a role in this.
I can confirm Volume 1 contains chapters 1-5 since I bought it.
The reader should follow chapter numbers (preferably from the same group), then group, then whatever else like uploader.

the reader works as intended since ch 1-5 cant replicate said bug
ch 6 vol 1 should be moved to vol 2

In this example, because the Sober Scans Ch6 is in V2 while the Ouroboros Ch6 is in V1, the reader first goes to V1 Ch6, then proceeds to V2 Ch6 (i.e., you read Ch6 twice, once for each volume). It seems like the fix here would be to report the Ouroboros Ch6 as being in the wrong volume and have that corrected to V2, which would stack those chapters and thus solve the group change when moving from Ch5 to Ch6 or the reverse.

Sure, but to an extent. If a situation like this arises, the system messes up. The problem seems to be that it's grouping by volume, when that shouldn't be the case, since a volume will never have the same chapter numbers as another volume because chapters increment linearly. You can thus safely assume it's a user error and implement fixes to the Reader accordingly.

Sure, the groups themselves can fix it, but that's not the point. What if they don't? What if other groups do the same thing, derailing entire reading experiences every volume? It's also not feasible for staff to intervene and go around policing how chapters are formatted just so the reader behaves correctly. It's a fundamental logic bug on the frontend. To have it unaddressed is to acknowledge devs are sweeping it under the rug.

Given the option to choose Ch.6 from Group A or B, a human reading Ch. 5 from Group A would naturally choose to read Ch.6 from Group A again, despite the volume number. The fact that the Reader chose an unexpected option should raise some flags.

This behavior accounts for titles which restart chapter numbering between volumes (V1C1-2-3, V2C1-2-3,etc.) - it is not universally true that 'chapters increment linearly'. (A cursory search returned this example - this seems to be more common in anthologies.) What you're suggesting - prioritizing chapter number without respect to volume number - would break that.

In this case, the issue is bad chapter data (specifically the chapter being assigned to the wrong volume), so the fix is correcting that data rather than changing the reader behavior.

Working as intended, blame the uploader for entering wrong values on the volume number field.

On the other hand, if a volume hasn't been released officially yet, don't try to guess where chapters should go.

Rule 2.4.4:
Only add volume numbers to chapters that have been published together in a volume.
If the chapter has not been published in a volume yet, do not guess what volume it should be in, just leave the volume field blank.
