As much as I love the original Working! the relationships in this one are a tad too... Dysfunctional.
And Shiho god I hate Shiho
He said he didn't like you so learn to take the rejection Jesus
If he ends up with her over some Stockholm syndrome shit or "I've actually always liked you but there was a misunderstanding" trope I will personally throw used laundry at the author myself
@Pandawanka Technically this is the original Working!. The author originally drew these 4koma for an online publication, and once she got picked up for serialization on a physical magazine, she actually wrote the other Working! with a whole new cast of characters. These are informally known as the cat troupe(web) and the dog troupe(mag), which is why the anime OPs have the cat/dog motiffs.
So I'd chalk it up to her not writing professionally or on a fixed schedule when she started web, and then she applied what she learned writing this one into the dog troupe version.
I actually found the cat troupe to be funnier more consistently, but I agree the character relationships are too dysfunctional and so on a whole I prefer the dog troupe characters. Even the volumes after the anime ends are a great improvement on this front, in that I genuinely thought the anime had skipped some stuff about Higashida and Hana because there's no way they'd fall in love with each other that suddenly.
But no, the anime is pretty much a 1:1 of the manga(minus a few characters like the maid). Including the sudden 6 month timeskip right after Hana decides to grow out her hair.
The later volumes were written after she'd already started writing the dog troupe series, so she does seem to have a soft spot for the characters in this one, since she keeps going back to them. There's also a joke in the supplemental material(she draws a lot of stuff about working!!!, to the point it's hard to keep track) where she flash-forwards to Higashida and Hana married happily(?) randomly for a few punchlines. In the later volumes, all the couples have already settled and it's basically about them being lovey-dovey.
Yes, 100% agreed it makes for funnier content - just more unlikeable characters.
I still enjoy this series nonetheless - huge fan of the anime/manga. Just reallyyyyyyy don't want that dude to end up with Shiho but knowing how the author runs I assume it'll happen eventually.
