I believe in the end no one was sure if the main girl Rena would have her memories when she woke up, as it's what kinda happened before. Also on the last chapter (97) last page (39) the translator notes that there are two missing pages that give the formal conclusion of the story. Namely if Rena still has her memories when she wakes up.

It has to do with the fact that Riku wanted Rena to really smile, to being able to have a genuinely happy smile... and not the pained one she usually had.
