Personally I'd forgotten about that given how many years ago it was, but I would have assumed the presentation of his human face was just an artistic depiction, considering he's only shown in silhouette and that silhouette seems rather large and round.

It's probably due to the artstyle, but Black(human) really reminds me of Hoshi no Samidare's big bad
