Y'know... a BL tag would have been very useful here. I'm personally not into it, so a warning would be nice.

Just found this mango. Comment has spoilers up to chp 18.

I can't even blame Ame for going nuts like this. They're both trapped in a codependent relationship, and while Umi tried to break it he basically folded immediately, and meanwhile Ame is desperate to have someone who wants her. I think that the impact of hearing her Aunt's conversation is low-key driving how Ame is devoting her entire life to be long Umi's wife. But even if Umi never met Itsuki, never started recovering at all, she would just be consigning them both to a miserable life where none of them can be truly happy.

It's not really Umi's fault that he was depressed and not given any professional help, or that Ame borderline enabled it-- in a way she probably felt better about herself by doing so. There's a lot going on between them. She caretook him to the extent it just allowed him to rot away. I can imagine that Umi probably hated himself and felt like a parasite using her too. Situations like that are never good for either person. As such the result is that Ame's sense of self and security completely depends on being Umi's caretaker.

None of these things would have gotten so bad if their guardians had actually been invested in their lives, or if those same adults had had the strength to take care of themselves... The creepy painting that Umi left up due to forgetting it over and over was of himself and his mother. However, I think it may as well have been of himself and Ame, too.

The only way for any of them to have a future is going to be for Itsuki and Ame to confront one another directly instead of through Umi. Umi is stuck in limbo where two people who love him are using him, manipulating him, in order to "win". They won't be honest with themselves or him, and instead are treating his illness like an excuse to enjoy triangulation.

I don't really trust whatever is going on with Itsuki, honestly, given that flustered sadistic expression and the way he seems to have taken pictures of Umi during that snowy flashback. The title definitely implies that Umi has a way of attracting unhealthy people's affection. Past traumatic experiences can make people targets that way.

I'd bet that Ame was on her way to accepting that Umi is gay, but her paranoia about Itsuki led her to see whatever ultimately ended up giving Umi amnesia, and it completely undid any progress she made towards improving her mental health. She's not quite lying when she said someone was enjoying Umi's suffering, but she's an unreliable narrator with BPD traits...
