Does this mean I have hope

we said 40 years old, this comic said 30 years old, but otherwise same situation

do I still have a chance?
Are you guys still in contact with each other? It doesn't have to be regular, daily, weekly or four times a month, or consistent at all; but just enough for her to still remember your existence (but not necessarily the promise). If yes and she remembers the promise, you are in your predetermined ideal situation. If yes but she doesn't remember the promise (something for you to find out later), it's a slight fumble but you can still recover and get together (in my humble, inexperienced opinion). If the first answer is no, then I'm sorry to say that things are very up in the air.

Also, damn, I'm jealous. I never made such a promise with a childhood friend of my own, I drifted apart from all of them, so I really hope things work out for you; and sooner, if I may be a bit pushy!

Yes, we both remember, yes, we talk every month or so. Live very far away, though.
Relationship kind of fell apart due to the distance, although we do try to visit or keep in touch.

Thank you for the encouragement. I kind of had given up on this bridge until now.

The joke might've worked better if it said she got married... to him before/after they turned 30, which bucks the very specific promise while keeping the spirit of staying together. Without any ages mentioned for reference, one could argue both of them stayed single until 30 and then married each other, thus keeping the promise instead of "breaking" it.

Good ending though.
