Unfortunately regarding alternate upload havens... it's a case where once any site builds up enough, it'll just attract another mass DMCA. Mangadex is a jewel in a desert of garbage aggregators, so it'll get priority bombardment so to speak.

Given the grey area that fan translations reside in and the zero-sum stance of a lot of Japanese publishers... Well, I hate to say the safest bet is like back in the days of torrents passed down from one community post to the next, but we may be there again. This is especially the case for those wanting to pay for the official releases, but not being in a country they can legally access them.

edit:
for those blissfully unawares:
https://forums.mangadex.org/threads...25-of-chapters-gone-staff-faq-update.2276028/

Basically a mass DMCA was filed and the mangadex community is left reeling.

on one hand, it doesn't sit right with me to pay for a digital copy. it's all too easy to forget about it once you've read it. not to mention with the copyright issues popping left and right nowadays, there's non-zero chance of "your" purchased content to be blocked.

on the other hand, there is a limit to the amount of title that can be published in my country's book store. and sometimes if it doesn't have enough sales, the local distributor will just stop publishing.

That's the unfortunate case for several of my old haunts too.
They haven't been reprinted in almost a decade and physical copies are few and far between. In some cases, the mangaka has long since died and the case for reprints went with them.

Archived scans (sometimes poorly done) are sometimes the only options.

Given the grey area that fan translations reside in and the zero-sum stance of a lot of Japanese publishers...

The thing is that a lot of the popular releases are nowadays NOT fan translations, but thinly disguised money-making schemes using usually aneurism-inducing AI translations.
As much as I dislike the attitude of most japanese publishers, especially the conglomerates, they are in their full right to protect their copyright when peeps start making money off it, and are not even hiding the fact.

MD did slip up there by not taking a more agressive stance towards the practice, especially when the scanlation group pages became pure ads for nothing less than commercial pirate groups.
You can't let that happen and not expect a reaction from the rights holders... It's damn near inevitable.

I'm pretty quick to hoist the Jolly Roger, especially when a publisher is willfully ignoring an obvious market, or is blatantly "maximising profits", but it's stupid to twist the tiger's tail deliberately.
And MD didn't clamp down on the groups that did this with a raised middle finger.
The end result is what we have now. Entirely predictable and wholly avoidable.

The only positive is that this will blow over, because slamdowns like this have never gotten the result the Lawyers and Shareholders aim at. Especially when the publishers don't use the opportunity to fill the existing potential market with legal content at an acceptable price point.
So they're spending shovels of dosh on Legal, with nothing to show for it in the end. It's unsustainable, and sooner or later the publishers catch on to the fact that they've been flogging a dead horse at their expense.
This, too, will pass..

It doesn't help that even where you CAN buy official digital copies of series they're almost universally garbage. Bad censorship, outrageous prices for digital copies (that might disappear at any moment!), you can't share/trade/sell your copies, stupid micro-transaction bullshit, etc.

As an example on the price thing: Buying enough points to "permanently" keep the entire Seven Deadly Sins series would be about $216 USD worth of points. I could buy physical copies of the entire series for around $252 USD on amazon right now and I wouldn't have to worry about any of their bullshit.

Some free site like WordPress with links to, let's say MediaFire or megaupload to encrypted files, and a .torrent for each of your series with all your chapters on them.

The main thing if md falls is to keep announcing new releases on mangaupdates so all community knows when a new release comes out.

That's why I started purchasing physical books. I see no point in buying a digital copy. You literally get a worse experience than torrenting the whole series, which you can do whatever you want with.

Though, at the same time, I do but my games on Steam instead of pirating, since it's generally a better experience. Gabe was right, it's a service issue.

And this is part of why I started learning Japanese. The other part is that I hate reading Spanish translations, even if they're good. Everything just sounds off to me. English is a bit better to read, but Japanese translates even worse to English than Spanish...in my opinion.

So, with those thoughts in mind, I started buying directly from Amazon.co.jp.

Bookshelf after bulk order 4 (128 books).jpg

Shipping is about a third of the total price (when buying at least around 15 books at once), though I still consider it worth it from a collector's perspective.

Books are actually the only thing I consider worth collecting. They have a function beyond just looking good on a shelf. And they won't become obsolete like VHS tapes and DVDs.

The only issue with importing Japanese books is that nobody around me can read them, so I can't have the typical "I'll lend you this book and we can discuss it later" type of situation with friends. :meguuusad: Considering moving to Japan just for this.

Those wolf pups somehow simultaneously remind me of a capybara, bear, and yes a canine depending on the panel. I think it's the small ears, flat face, and stubby bodies... :thonk:

Personally, what would work best for me, is a sub model.
I don't have not want to own garbage isekai slop, and most manga these days don't even finish. They're just LN ads that get 50 chaps max, why pay for ads? Fuck that.

So, at best, I'd consider paying for access. But even then, they always find ways to make everything inconvenient, so, again, fuck that.

I just wanna say, looking at that picture, this is why I'm extremely reluctant to buy physical.
I hate hoarding physical goods, I want my house to be as empty as possible, and books are sentimental objects that can easily be hoarded, and you're liable to never revisit, while paying a premium to shuttle them every time you move.

My dad still has doezen of boxes he did not open, after moving to his last flat.

Yeah, it's not really a cheap collection hobby. Though it's much better than collecting things like figurines. I really see no point in those (Edit: unless you're part of the r/cummingonfigurines community. Don't look it up.). Pure decorations without function are just not my thing.

Anyway, the reason I say it's not that expensive, even after considering the shipping tax, is that when calculated, each book on that photo cost on average 8.78 euros.

There are 128 books that I bought over 4 bulk purchases, totalling 1,124.01 euros. Is this expensive? Dunno. But looking at the prices of technical books, like the classic C Programming Language: ANSI C Version, which is still going for around 60 euros if bought new, it sure would take a lot more money to fill a bookshelf. Granted, in this case I just buy used most of the time.

Agree with you there 100%. That's why so far, I only bought light novels. And mostly only those I've at least read some part of before in English (or the Japanese web novel in the case of a few) or have high expectations of.

I also try to buy series that have ended or are about to end. 9 of the 17 series on that bookshelf have ended, though I still have to buy a few books to have them completed. I'm waiting for more books I wanna buy so the shipping is cheaper.

The first manga I'm tempted to buy is The One Within the Villainess, which is close to releasing its last volume. Haven't read the two light novel volumes yet, but just from reading the manga adaptation, it appears to be a much better version of the story.

I also just see manga as books with a "low cost to performance" ratio. I personally get more out of written books than drawn books.

That's just me though, since I generally can imagine a better representation of the events in my head than what artists can draw. I also like more details in stories, which manga adaptations tend to skip.

I just wanna say, looking at that picture, this is why I'm extremely reluctant to buy physical.

Yeah, once I reached 100 books, I though "Wow, this was probably a bad idea.", but mostly because I saw that it's a never-ending hobby. 100 books, 200, are not that much of a problem, but I saw myself continuing to buy books, and having to buy more bookshelves. Even reorganising my room to fit them.

I'm not too worried about moving since for me it's a rare event that only happens once in a decade at most.

But books really are the only thing I found worthy of being collected. And they definitely grow sentimental value, especially after reading them.

All that to say, yes, I agree. It's better not to start collecting anything physical at all. You just risk your house looking like a serial killer's, that's all.

So happy to see more fluff monsters added to the story. I guess I worry though that there isn't enough connective plot tissue here. That said I'm happily reading every update. Thanks for the update. Great job with the translations.

yep. but at the same time, author would need a steady sales to finish the manga.
not like you can just buy wholesale after the manga is finished.

thus, the dilema
