I'm glad the ML cared about the FL a little.

I was beginning to think he was kind of shitty but at least he has a kind side too.
nah yeah, the "shitty" stuff is entirely in his head, and it's 100% him rationalizing to himself that she doesn't actually like him because he thinks he has to "protect himself" from the construct of her that's in his mind.

Every action he's taken and every word he's spoken aloud to her has shown his true colors, just like how she's clearly into him and is nothing like the person he's built up in his imagination.

Comparison to "The Dangers in My Heart" from chapter 1 discussion:
the older sister looks like Kana, even the living room layout with the sofa kinda reminds me of Ichikawa's house with the cutout to the kitchen. Chapter 71 of The Dangers in My Heart shows both: The Dangers in My Heart, Vol. 5, Ch. 71
... from chapter 3 discussion:
the similarities to The Dangers in My Heart (aka BokuYaba) keep piling up. To add to the list:
... and now in chapter 4:
All I'm gonna say is: anyone who's read BokuYaba should be experiencing a profound case of deja vu right now.
The author is basically saying out loud that BokuYaba is an inspiration on page 3:

the main character calling the classroom "my one safe refuge" is the same as Ichikawa with the library in BokuYaba chapter 7:

plus, [BokuYaba chapter 14 spoilers]: the MC worrying about the female lead hurting herself early on in the story.

P.S. Everyone should go read The Dangers in My Heart, it's great.

Comment from the Reddit thread:

Am a Japanese reader. First discovering the English fan community now.

Is there a reason the fan translation seems to have the heroine’s name as “Kiwaki?” Because in all of the original Japanese versions, the furigana text for her last name is written きゅうらぎ or Kyūragi. Not Kiwaki.

Yes, it’s quite an uncommon surname, but it comes from a real former location name in Saga prefecture, having the same kanji notation and furigana reading.
