Okay, now swap the characters in this version of the manga to female. Not cute females with cat ears making funny noises, but the same level of debauchery as these men show. I don't see how that would improve their situation or the perception of it.This was brilliant and beautiful. It accurately captures the reality of life for men in these circumstances. It even expresses the unique element of male camaraderie when they band together for a project (the mangaka and Old Man Yani). Really, the comedy and joy of the manga is cute useless (cat)girls, because as a species, we don't expect or need women to be anything. They exist in the male mindset (and often enough, in their own), to be cute and funny.
Useless men, however, are despicable and disgusting, and reading a manga about their lives would be so grating on the soul none of us would make it past the first few chapters.
Actually, if any of you read that gambler or failed golfer series, that has very similar vibes.

Tell that to mangakas doing behind-the-veil dropping metacommentray on their own series.Sir, this is a Wendy's
Actually, this is a good point as well. If the women were shown as being typical of the "ugly poor" we definitely would not empathize (or would really struggle to). Franken-Fran's author occasionally shows a "grotesque" example of a woman (an ugly, poor, old one), and it's remarkable the effect such realism has on our ability to empathize with them.Okay, now swap the characters in this version of the manga to female. Yaniko is disgusting but she is tolerated, if not loved, by the cast and readers because she naturally acts cute, is physically attractive, female, and, most importantly, IS A CAT.
That's not a woman, it's just a dude with long hair. Also, that's Yaku, the guy with dyed hair in this one is KansaiWho...is the catatonic long haired woman supposed to be? Landlord-chan?![]()
It would take an exceptionally ugly woman for society to not empathize with her. As for low social/economic status, for women that's irrelevant at best.Actually, this is a good point as well. They are out there! You just have to pay attention, and then regret it, immediately. It would take an exceptionally ugly woman for society to be not empathize with her. As for low social/economic status, for women that's irrelevant at best.
