not many people know this, but when your eyesight deteriorates to the point of legal blindness, your nasal cavity expands approximately 20%. The expanded area allows air to pass over more mucous membrane and thus allows a heightened sense of smell. there is a nerve connecting the eyes and nose before reaching the brain, so the myth of losing one sense and the others being improved is actually partially true. it only works with eyesight and smell. note that some are able to trigger a temporary expanse of the nasal cavity at will, though this is rare.
